Let’s get active!

Nothing’s worse than complaining without acting!
In my case I feel much better if I can do something rather than just complaining, and lets be honest: complaining won’t change anything, but your own mood and the mood of people around you, and not to the better…

In one of my articles (about how to stay positive), I said I feel better if I do something rather than just complain. So I thought you might feel better too, and besides doing clean ups we can make a difference and spread the awareness if we take action and talk to people who own a business. Thats how we can reach a bigger crowd, because if business owner follow and make changes, offer eco friendly solutions, more people can join! Because they get a chance to make a happy choice.
So I thought I make it a little bit easier for you.
I am sharing some templates with you. You can either print them out and hand it out in shops, or send links by email to businesses or even private persons to raise awareness.
I also have some Email Templates for you if you don’t have the time to write them yourself. You can copy paste or just use as inspiration for your own Email.

If somebody is planning a balloon release, if your favorite coffee shop doesn’t offer reusables, if your local grocery store is packing single carrots in styrofoam and plastic. If your favorite take away restaurant is still using styrofoam container.

Because
“We wont change anything if we don’t do anything. “

We are lucky to live in a world where we can spread the word easily, it’s actually just one click away.
In my case, I don’t argue with staff in restaurants or coffee shops, they just do their work, and mostly they would totally agree with us, but they mostly can’t change anything. So thats why I want to talk to the owner/manager and that’s why I am writing emails to the boss or store manager. They can make changes! We need to have them on board! Even if their staff doesn’t care and pour the coffee into the throw away cup if you order it in a ceramic mug, they can change the habit of their staff.
Same with bars where they put straws into drinks if you don’t request one. We need the management on board, they can make changes, they can say: Straws on request only! We need them to provide paper straws instead plastic straws….

Get active, start to raise awareness to use your voice and vote for the shops that are making changes already.
Say thank you to those who are making changes already! (Even more important than complaining about those who don’t care).

You agree? You are on board? Let’s get started:

Against balloon releases.

Fighting single use straws

How to organize clean ups

Things you can suggest when talking or writing to business owner

  • Instead of using plastic spoons, always provide reusables or wooden spoons for take away.
  • Serve Straws on request only and then make the switch to paper straws
  • Go back to this: ask your customers if they want to stay in or take away. Too many times they serve in single use even though the customers are staying in to drink and eat.
  • If somebody wants to eat in house, give them a reusable cup/glass, plate and cutlery.
  • Use reusable glasses for drinking water (and no straw without request please)
  • Provide napkins made of 100% recycled materials. And let customers chose if they want any. Mostly I get way too many even if I don’t need any.
  • Don’t put lids on the cups if people don’t want them. This way we can reduce the amount of single use plastic drastically and you will save money too.
  • And for to go items, provide biodegradable cups made of natural materials (but check if they actually can get composted in your town, work together with special compost facilities and very important if you use compostable items: separate your trash at the end of the day or provide a separate bin)
  • You could also invite people to bring their own reusable container and spoons with them. Some shop owners already promote this and offer a little discount of 10 to 50 cents if somebody is bringing their own reusable container or cups.
  • Provide recycling bins in your locality.
  • Think outside the box: In Germany and also in some colleges in the US, they are testing a reusable deposit system for food to go: they connect with other restaurants/food vendors and people can get food and coffee to go in reusable container and cups, pay a deposit and bring them back in any participating location.
  • Stay one step ahead of your competitors and make some eco friendly changes today!! Its always good to be one step ahead of the herd.

Email template for coffee-shops, restaurants and bars.

Dear [put name of the owner or company],

my name is [insert your name] and I LOVE [insert everything you like about their shop. e.g. their ice-cream/coffee/cake/interieur]. To make your shop/restaurant/etc. an even better place I’d like to offer you some ideas. Especially on how to avoid plastic.

For example: [insert your ideas here]

  • ex. Instead of serving me a straw without my request, you could simply ask upfront. This way I can say no in order to avoid single-use plastic and you save one straw.
  • ex. Instead of serving me a togo cup when I drink in, provide reusable cups.
  • ex. I also recognized you don’t offer a recycling bin. It would be great to have one in order to have food waste recycled correctly.
  • [insert your ideas..]

Don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed your place a lot. I just want to raise awareness about the plastic- and waste problems on our planet and give some ideas on how you too can make some easy fixes in your business. These changes, no matter how big or small, will help to clean our planet – at least in our own local environment.

One of the biggest dangers nowadays are the single used plastics in our daily life. Used only for a few minutes/seconds and then lasting forever. Plastic takes from 20-600 years to break down and many of the products can’t or won’t get recycled in municipal facilities.

I see too many of these straws, spoons, bottles and bags flying around everywhere. In every clean up, food container, straws, bottles, plastic bags and cups make a huge amount of the stuff we pick up. The wind carries it easily into the ocean. Where it pollutes and kills birds and marine life. And in the end it ends up in our food chain (through fish, ocean salt, water).

Unfortunately most of the single use cups (for coffee, food or ice cream) can’t get recycled because of the plastic film, wich makes them waterproof. Even if the cup itself is a paper cup.  Bio-Plastic/Compostable plastic products included. In most cities they won’t even accept them in the Compost Facility. Please check with your local waste management if they take them. It’s really important.

Here are some more ideas for you as an successful Business Owner:

  • Straws, lids and paper sleeves on request only.
  • Train your staff to ask if the drink is for here or to go. And only use to go cups for To Go.
  • Use paper straws or wooden spoons for to go coffee.
  • Use reusable plates and water cups.
  • Provide Recycling bins for your guests.
  • [Insert Anything else you like to suggest]

Your obvious benefits would be:

  • You save money, because you reuse cups and avoid straws etc.
  • You gain a competitive advantage.
  • You can even run a local PR campaign to promote your new changes.
  • and much more…

And last but not least you’ll do something good for our planet. 😉

These are just a few simple and easy to implement suggestions. No hard feelings at all.
Thanks for reading.

Best wishes

Template to contact supermarkets

You can copy and paste the Email Templates, but make sure to insert all your details and delete any unused [Insert XY]…
Scroll down to find a Template to contact the producer himself…

Hey [Insert Name,Manager, Store]

You are my (Insert:local or favorite) Supermarket here in [Insert City, Area XY] and I like that you are giving me a lot of plastic free products and choices in your store.

I was shopping in your store recently and I saw [insert fruit or veg and brand name you mean] wrapped unnecessary in plastic.
I was saddened and distressed to see them shrink wrapped in completely unnecessary and non-recyclable plastic. [Insert fruit or veg]   have a naturally and compostable packaging and as such, do not require any plastic packaging.

Single use plastic, such as this packaging, accounts for 50% of the 300 million tons of plastic produced each year, and none of it is recyclable. Scientists estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. Packaging such as this is unsustainable and unacceptable.

I urge you to reconsider purchasing this product from [Insert the brand name] and selling it in your stores. Instead, please consider selling more package free produce, even going so far as to label it as such.  At present, I do not purchase any produce in your store that is packaged in plastic, but these [insert the specific fruit or veg you mean] were so shocking that I felt the need to express my dismay and disappointment.

Sincerely

Dear [Manager Name, Brand]
I was recently shopping at [Supermarkets name and location]  and saw your [veg or fruit]
wrapped unnecessary in single use plastic.

While the whole world is talking about the plastic problem, and talk about solutions, it sadly looks like even more and more companies are wrapping more and more fresh produce in plastic.

I urge you to reconsider wrapping this product in plastic. Instead, please consider selling more package free produce.

In the meantime I do not purchase any produce of your brand that is packaged in plastic.
These [insert the specific fruit or veg you mean]were so shocking that I felt the need to express my dismay and disappointment.

I am looking forward to see some Eco Friendly changes  and unwrapped [Insert Fruit or veg] from your Brand soon.

Sincerely,
