Natural lip balm recipe: easy to DIY

Natural Lip Balm

I carried a “normal” lip balm in a plastic tube with me for the last 2 years. Crazy it actually lasted that long. But I didn’t use it thats much actually.

After my 100km hike my lips where soooo dry and my lip balm almost empty so I decided to make my own natural honey lip balm.
I still had some organic bees wax pellets from bees wax wrap that I made the other day, so I checked for some recipes and found a lot of similar but slightly different ones and tried my own.

DIY lip balm

It had been the first time I tried to make lip balm, so I thought that it is enough to stir the mixture only while heating and melting. Because that’s how all the introductions on other blogs said it’s enough to do. They didn’t say anything that the ingredients could separate. So when I took my mixture off the stove it separated… and I was like nooo, what should I do? … I was lucky that I was visiting my parents at that time, so my dad came and said: hey thats like when your trying to make a delicious salad dressing. The oil and vinegar don’t mix if you just pour them together, they need to emulsify/get mixed properly and thats just made with great stirring. So I did, I stirred until it cooled and I had the best lip balm ever 🙂

So maybe other people don’t have that problem, but if oil and water/vinegar/other stuff don’t mix properly, you need to stir a lot 🙂

Maybe next time I’ll try and add a little beet root to make it red, but I need to do a little more research if that would actually work…

You can find bees wax if you ask your local bee keeper, some organic stores sell it or buy it online.
You can find cocoa butter in those zero waste shops that have other DIY ingredients.

Honey Lip Balm

Melt everything in a bowl that you don’t need for cooking anymore (beeswax is very very sticky). I actually used a bigger jar and put it inside a pan with water that I boiled.

Don’t let the mixture cook, just melt it on medium heat then stir it and let it heat for a few minutes.
Then stir it until it cools down.

When the mixture was still a little soft I filled it into small jars.
It works for me (in a cooler country) but I don’t know if you might need less coconut oil if you live in a warmer climate… Maybe somebody tried and know?? If yes, let us know 🙂

Vegan Lip Balm

  • 3 tbs cocoa butter
  • 3 tbs coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 candelilla wax** (you can also use carnauba or soy wax)

The same than above: melt and combine the ingredients. Stir and let cool down while stirring, so that the wax, butter and oil can combine fairly.
Then fill into small jars or tubes is you have. Set in fridge to let cool completely. is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to and affiliated sites.
