Homemade bagel recipe (vegan and wheat free)
I know a lot of people live in areas where they can't find affordable unpackaged bread and need to buy plastic wrapped ones from the supermarket.
With a few easy recipes it is just so easy to make your own.
A Green Christmas: Eco friendly Gifts and Decorations
Christmas is coming soon.
And its coming every year in December. And every year the malls and online shops are getting overcrowded and hectic the few weeks before. People are spending heaps of money for a lot of gifts (approx $75 Billion in the US). They are buying a lot of new decorations because they threw out the old one or just want something new. And after Christmas (Or any other Holiday) you mostly have a huge amount of plastic and gift wrap trash in your house.
Living Zero Waste...with kids!
I get a few Emails about that Zero Waste with kids is impossible, or just too hard to get close to Zero Waste.
Since I don't have kids and not planning on having some, I can't answer those questions.
But I know a few women doing great in combining a low waste/zero waste lifestyle with kids.
So I thought I ask a Zero Waste Power Woman and Mother to write an article about it to share with all of the families out there..
What does Palm-oil and Orangutans have in common?
Palm-oil and Orangutans. What they have in common you may ask?
Since a couple of years I am trying to only buy conventional palm-oil free products. And I am not only refusing it because of health reasons, but also because of environmental issues. And it's not very easy to refuse palm-oil, because it is in just so many products (I listed a few palm oil free soaps in the shop)
But I will stop writing now and my friend Deà Starlling (Wildlife biologist and conservation photographer) will continue:
Natural laundry detergent and totally for free!
Autumn is the season for you to collect as many horse chestnuts as you can. Why? Because they make a great natural laundry detergent?
How? I will tell you now...
DIY natural honey lip balm and a vegan option
I carried a "normal" lip balm in a plastic tube with me for the last 2 years. Crazy it actually lasted that long.
After my 100km hike my lips where soooo dry and my lip balm almost empty so I decided to make my own natural honey lip balm.
I still had some organic bees wax pellets from bees wax wrap that I made the other day, so I checked for some recipes and found a lot of similar but slightly different ones and tried my own.
100k in 24 hours: training, preparation, plastic free snacks
I looked at a wooden sign saying: 96KM only 4 km left…. My leg hurt, my feet hurt, my back hurt… I was swearing and clinging to my boyfriends arm. „Oh man, I can’t make it… it hurts so bad.. why did I even sign up for this…“
I know it is hard to dive into a new habit. But with a few tips and tricks and trying on a regular basis it will get easier and easier. Like if I remember when I started running a few years ago. First: I didn't wanted to go if it was raining, it was too early or too late... But when I put my running shoes and clothes straight in front of my bed so it was the first thing I saw in the morning, I just got up an went for a short run. And after a while it was like I missed this when I didn't go.
Same thing with shopping plastic free. In the beginning I saw all the plastic that I didn't wanted to buy anymore, and now I only see the plastic free version and I don't miss any plastic packaged food anymore. (I know it is not easy and not always possible in every country/city to avoid plastic a 100%, but after all my travel I am certain a 90% is always possible.)
DIY Recipes to get your favorite sweet treat: plastic free, wheat free, gluten free, palm oil free or vegan.
If I think back to the days where I bought my snacks in the store.... I bought them regularly because it has been so easy. Then one day I read about the problems the palm oil industry is forcing (deforestation, forest fires, orang utans loosing their home, dying, etc.) and I started to look at the ingredients lists and saw: palm oil everywhere. And when I started to eat less wheat, I saw: wheat everywhere, and when I started to quit plastic, yeah no single chance to buy sweet treats in the store anymore :D
4 tips for an eco friendly house cleaning
Have you ever thought about what's in your cleaning products?
We got so used to buy all the plastic bottled harsh chemicals to clean our bathroom, kitchen and living room.
We got so used to the extreme smell of these products too, so we think if somethings not smelling extreme it can't really clean.
We buy cheap plastic brushes that break easily and needs to get replaced often and we clean our dishes with plastic sponges and scrubs that shed plastic micro fibers that pollute our wild water.
Homemade (low carb) Tortillas and Tortilla Chips
Some things are just impossible to buy plastic free in the shops. I couldn't find any plastic free wraps or tortilla chips anywhere.
Unless you live close to a Mexican restaurant that likes to sell you some of their homemade tortilla wraps or tortilla chips in your own container, it is impossible to get them plastic free.
So I googled and tried out a few recipes, got a few tips in Instagram and now I just make them myself.
Yes I know it is a little but more work than just throwing them into the shopping basket but it is really worth it!
Homemade sunscreen easy to make with zinc oxide
Why I tried to make my own sunscreen with zinc oxide?
I already wrote about that conventional sunscreen is dangerous for our ocean and coral reefs and ocean wild life. (Click here to get to the article)
But conventional sunscreen is also in the critics of being unhealthy for us. I am not working in a laboratory, I am not a chemist and I read a lot of different articles about sunscreens. Like with everything else some people say we should avoid them some other say they are not harmful at all.....
How to make your own beeswax wrap
Cling film or aluminium foil are common products to store food or cut veggies and fruits in the fridge, to wrap sandwiches to go or to keep flies away from salads when having a garden party (this could also easily be made with a wooden cutting board or a cotton cloth).
Plastic cling film is in many countries not allowed in the recycling bin, it will go straight to landfill, in many others it will get sorted out to get burned in the incinerator.
Aluminium foil can get recycled in many many cities around the world (just because I visited recently I know it belongs into the trash in Toronto (August2018, maybe it changes in the future).
Homemade natural shampoo: Rye flour for healthy and shiny hair
When I started to quit plastic I bought a solid shampoo bar first of all. In the beginning I found it quiet nice, but my hair was getting really dry and got more and more split ends, so I researched for more alternatives.
And I read about rye flour as homemade natural shampoo for healthy and shiny hair on many Zero Waste Blogs so I thought: Why not.
Eco friendly, Plastic Free, Sustainable, Ethical clothing?
If you want to make eco friendly choices you need to be aware of soooo much. Eco friendly, plastic free, sustainable, ethical, fair, etc... It is not easy to find the right and 100% best solution so it is again about finding the happiest choice for you.
I actually never ever thought about my clothes were made of plastic before my plastic free journey. Even though I knew Polyester is not a natural material.
Plastic Free July
My plastic free journey started 1.5 years ago.
While traveling through South East Asia 2016/2017 I became aware how huge the plastic pollution problem is. In May and June 2017 I already started to become more aware and used less plastic, but there have still been so much plastic around....
I read about "plastic free July" somewhere and this turned my boat around.
One month without using plastic. Is this actually possible?
I remember in July 2017 I have been to an event, and they had freebies (packaged nuts) and somebody said: just take it and eat it in August. And I said: but what if I just don't want to buy/use plastic after this July anymore?
And now it's been one year, without buying new plastic....
Plastic Free, Vegan Ice Cream
You scream and I scream and we all scream for ice cream :D This scene from the movie "down by law" from Jim Jarmusch is one of my favorite. And ice cream is one of my favorite sweet treat too.
But most of the ice cream comes in plastic container, in paper container with plastic lining, in plastic wrapper.
So I either opt for an ice cream shop where they sell waffle cones :) Or I make my own ice cream. Because besides the packaging, the ingredients are mostly not healthy either. A lot of sugar, color, and stuff I don't even know what it actually is.
Zero Waste Summer: Picnic, BBQ, Festivals, Parties
In summer everybody is enjoying being outside, having picnics and BBQ's in the park or at the beach.
Have you noticed the huge amount of trash being left behind after such events?
Bins are mostly too small and don't have lids so birds or the wind can take the trash easily out of there. If the bin is too full humans leave the trash just beside. Some people sadly just leave the trash on the spot when they leave the place.
So let's talk about what you can do to make summer picnics, bbq's, outdoor birthday parties more classy than trashy:
13 Tips for a more sustainable lifestyle
"A sustainable lifestyle attempts to reduce the use of earths natural resources and personal resources. Its the attempt to reduce the use of plastic and reduce your carbon footprint by using altering methods of energy, food, clothes, transportation."
Made the switch to a reusable water bottle yet?
In many countries we do have safe drinking water from tap, but many people still buy plastic bottled water. Why? I don´t know. I actually drank from tap and refilled my reusable water bottle from tap, long before I even heard about how bad plastic is. It was easy, cheaper, and tasty... Let's take a look at some plastic bottle facts and why we are better off by buying a reusable water bottle.

26 eco friendly mothers day gift ideas
It is Mothers day next week.
Like valentines day, easter, Christmas, birthday it's another day where a lot of people spend a lot of money for a lot of gifts to show some love. Including a lot of waste mostly.
The gift itself might come in a package, theres another gift wrapper around (mostly single used), then maybe a ribbon, a card in an envelope and when you bought it it has most likely been in a plastic wrap too... Flowers mostly grown in a different part of the world... Chocolate in packaging plus plastic wrap...
We can do better :) and we can do it even more personal, maybe self made and with a huge portion of love. Because you can't buy happiness in a store!
Let me show you a few ideas.
Which sunscreen is REALLY Reef Friendly and Biodegradable?
A couple of months ago I heard about reef friendly sunscreen the first time. I grew up close to the baltic sea but not close to a coral reef, and I haven't heard about that sunscreen is dangerous for the coral reefs before.
I was worried when I read about this danger, but quickly I researched there are many reef friendly/reef safe claimed sunscreens on the market already.
Only to discover some of them still use harmful ingredients in their products...

How small changes in your daily practice can have a big Impact: 8 Tips for Businesses
Did you know that straws and cups and plastic cutlery and styrofoam container are found daily on beach clean ups around the world?
A lot of people don't know or are not thinking about how or that their habits can influence the environment.
Most people are so used to straws and plastic cutlery because bars provide these even without asking for need. If we cant reach some of the customers, we need to reach the business owner or manager in shops, cafés, street food counters, markets, etc.
Besides using green energy, using organic produce, selling eco friendly-local.organic products you can do a lot more....
